Dennis Chavez papers, 1954-1962.

Summary: Series I consists of three documents: A 1954 report by Senator Thomas C. Hennings, Jr., a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Privileges and Elections, concerning the disputed re-election of Chavez to the U.S. Senate in 1952. (Hennings recommends that the Senate find Chavez was lawfully elected.) A 1961 "Report from Washington to New Mexico" by Chavez reviewing his recent activities in the Senate. A one page printing of excerpts from the March, 1961 "Congressional Record" featuring statements by Chavez on legislative issues. Series II consists of newspaper clippings on Chavez's death and an unpublished typed manuscript by Gilberto Espinosa tracing the Chavez family in New Mexican history.

Antonio Gilberto Espinosa was born on December 11, 1897 in Del Norte, Co. He was a descendant of Captain Marcello Espinosa, who came to New Mexico with Oñate in 1598. Espinosa wrote books and articles, and lectured on the history, culture and folklore of New Mexico. He was considered an authority on early Spanish and Mexican land grants.
